HIsmelt Plant Decommissioning and Site Remediation
Sedgman Onyx was engaged by Rio Tinto to support the HIsmelt plant decommissioning and site remediation including a series of studies and an engineering, procurement, and construction management (EPCM) contract.
HIsmelt was an innovative iron making process using air-based direct smelting technology. This plant was de-energised in 2012 and Rio Tinto later undertook the rehabilitation of the site through a process of deconstruction, demolition and lease rehabilitation.

Scope
Our scope covered the initial scope, estimate and schedule development followed by tender preparation, bid evaluation, contract award and subsequent on-site engineering and deconstruction management.
Outcome
The primary challenge was to ensure the safe decommissioning, disassembly, demolition and site remediation within the constraints of a complex plant on a small footprint. Through rigorous planning and close collaboration with contractor and operations teams, the project was successfully completed on time, within budget with no lost time injuries.
Its successful completion resulted in the project being nominated for a global Rio Tinto excellence award.
